How it works

An anagram uses every letter you have exactly once, in a different order. The solver reads your letters, ignores spaces, digits and punctuation, and keeps the first 15. It then checks every word of the ENABLE word list, 172,823 words, and keeps a word when your letters can spell it: each letter of the word must be matched by one of your letters, and every letter you are missing must be covered by a blank tile. A question mark stands for a blank tile and can be any letter. Words that use all your letters are shown first as anagrams. Words that use only some of them follow, sorted from the longest to the shortest and alphabetically inside each length. You can hide short words by raising the shortest word setting. The list is a general English dictionary: it has plurals and verb forms, and it leaves out names, abbreviations and most slang.

Example: the letters listen give 90 words. The anagrams are elints, enlist, inlets, listen, silent and tinsel. Add one blank, listen?, and the list grows to 1,269 words, 35 of them using all seven tiles.

Frequently asked questions

What is an anagram?

An anagram is a word made by rearranging all the letters of another word, such as listen and silent. This solver lists those first, then the shorter words you can build from some of the letters.

How do I use a blank tile?

Type a question mark for each blank. It can stand for any letter, so eilnst? finds words like clients and dentils as well as words that use only the six real letters.

How many letters can I enter?

Up to 15, including blanks. Anything after the fifteenth letter is ignored. Spaces, digits and punctuation are skipped.

Why are some words I know missing?

The list is a general English dictionary. It does not include proper names, abbreviations or most slang, and a word that one game accepts may not be in it.

Can I use it for a word game or a crossword?

It is handy for finding candidates. Check the word in the dictionary that your game or competition uses, because official lists differ from this one.

How are the results sorted?

The anagrams come first. Shorter words follow from the longest length to the shortest, and each group is in alphabetical order.

Can I hide very short words?

Yes. Set the shortest word to 3, 4 or more letters and the shorter words below that length disappear from the list.

Is what I type sent to a server?

No. The letters are checked in your browser and nothing you type is sent anywhere.
